Salutogenesis is the approach of focusing on factors that support human health and well-being, rather than on factors that cause disease (pathogenesis). While most people start care looking for a solution for their pain, most choose to continue under the salutogenic model of wellness care. All during your care, we educate you on how to take care of your body so that you can do more than just feel well, but rather empower you to make the healthiest decisions in order to LIVE well.
What is Chiropractic?
You are a self-healing, self-regulating organism - a process all controlled by the brain through your nervous system. The instructions flowing from your brain to your body, can get jumbled along the way by pressure on your nerves - pressure caused by misaligned bones in your spine. Specific spinal adjustments by a chiropractor can help improve this communication by reducing and removing the pressure caused by abnormal spinal bone movement. After that interference is removed, health often returns on its own.
Just as any complex machine benefits from regular maintenance, so does the human body. Stratford Chiropractic delivers care that is focused on improving your health by restoring structural balance. When the body is functioning properly, it is more able to avoid pain and injury, have more energy and possess overall improved health - simply speaking, your body will be able to adapt to its environment better.
What is the Vertebral Subluxation Complex?
In our office, we typically use the term "misalignment," but on occasion, you'll hear the word "subluxation." A Vertebral Subluxation Complex is the term referring to the abnormal alignment and motion of a spinal bone which compresses nerve tissue resulting in muscle spasms, weakness/atrophy. In addition, this complex also includes inflammation, edema and swelling of the affected tissue. As a result of the previous changes in and around spinal joints, degeneration produces fibrous tissue, erosion of bone and overall loss of balance in the tissue.
For the curious minds out there, all 5 components of this complex are termed:
While most people associate nerve pressure with pain in the back or neck, this interference can be present without pain too. You may suffer from it for years before symptoms appear. Symptoms people may have as a result of this interference are: Allergies, Asthma, Arthritis, Bed Wetting, High Blood Pressure, Digestive Problems, Ear Infections, Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Headaches, Menstrual Irregularities, Diarrhea or Constipation. The best thing to do is to have an exam performed by Dr. Becky before you develop symptoms. Stratford Chiropractic encourages everyone to get checked - all the way from newborns to 100+ years of age, because everyone can benefit.
What is an Adjustment?
Specific Chiropractic adjustments were developed to address the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. As we already learned, restoring proper fluid motion to a joint, increases the function of all tissues around the joint - including nerves, glands, blood vessels and muscle. There are numerous techniques used to adjust a subluxation. At Stratford Chiropractic, after an analysis of your spinal bones (and often times, extremity joints), an adjustment is performed using Dr. Becky's hands. She intends to deliver the most specific adjustment possible while using lighter pressure. Additionally, for some patients with specific preferences or conditions, an instrument (called an Activator) can be used. It is not possible for anyone to receive a specific spinal adjustment from anyone other than a trained and licensed Doctor of Chiropractic.
What Does My Posture Have to Do With Anything?
We are all born with a reflex (the Righting Reflex), which we maintain throughout our entire lives, that causes our eyes to always want to be parallel to the horizon. If there is something occurring in our bodies causing our eyes to stray from that parallel state, our body will compensate to get our eyes level again. When it does this, a person will then exhibit a high shoulder/ high hip, abnormal muscle tension, plus other alterations. Additionally, it causes us to carry our weight unevenly on our legs (typically 10 pounds or more!). In time, this imbalance will cause joints on the side with more weight to wear and tear faster, resulting in knee, hip, ankle or foot pain. A simple posture screening can detect the necessity of a full examination.
What Can I Expect My First Visit?
The first thing Dr. Becky will do is sit down with you, one on one, and discuss any health concerns you may have. She will then do a thorough chiropractic examination, a posture analysis and order x-rays if necessary.
As Dr. Becky is examining you, she will educate you on your results. It is your choice at this point to continue care with us.
As always, we encourage any questions you may have - because when dealing with your health, you should be 100% informed, 100% of the time.
